Week 7

 This week was spent doing the training for the CHDR's titan scanner. While I failed to get pictures the process is fairly straight forward to explain. You start a session, pick the correct settings and from there adjust the white balance and exposure as necessary to get the image toward a neutral gray, and then you adjust from there down to a more whiteish image. It's a fairly involved set up requiring you to remember a exact set of steps and settings but once that;s done the work is straight forward enough, it's just getting to the point where you're comfortable with the software. Besides the scanner I got around to adding all the items we took pictures of to the excel sheet for inventory purposes. Next week we will meet and hopefully scan in the items we have so the real work on transcription can begin with higher quality images, working from a phone camera images are fine with how today's cameras are but having these high res images is more important for  RICHES and for the proposed showcase of school history that Howard middle school wants to set up in their main hallway.

    Once more of the transcription work is done the sheets will be sent to Geoff at RICHES so he can confirm we did them properly, it would be a shame to do a bunch of work on these only to have them turn out incorrect.

Summer week 1

 This summer semester will be a continuation of last semesters Howard digitization project. This first week there's not much to discuss, sending emails to get things restarted, much of the decisions for this week were done during the last week of last semester. This week I showed the new undergraduate intern the basics of how the capture one software and the titan scanner worked. We redid scans of two of the banners with the hopes that next week we will be able to get these put together with Photoshop automatically by providing more overlap between the images, if this fails we will have to learn how to put the images together manually, which may mean yet another re-scan as if the Photoshop algorithm cant put the images together I have concerns that we wont be able too. Summer week 2

  This week was used to both redo the banners (yet again) and preview the other materials that were borrowed from Howard before the school all but shut down for construction over the summer. I met with Mike Shier from the CHDR and went over how to manually do the Photoshop combining of banners, the first thing that was apparently is that the algorithm failed to produce a combined images likely because the images couldn’t be aligned i.e manually moving the   images until things lined up still resulted in another part of the image not lining up.   Mike then suggested redoing the images so that there are four takes of the banner instead of the 16 or so that we redid last week, this gives less points of potential failure; after all redoing four images is far easier than redoing 16. Summer week 10

 This week was initially going to be spent working on editing the images of the 1950 "sports" scrapbook, only for me to try to use Photoshop at the school library and be met with a “you no longer have access to this content, contact a administrator” message. In absence of being able to work on the photo editing I continued work on the metadata for the scrapbook. While many of these are going to be similar, “here’s a image of a Orlando Senior High School V ____ football game poster” and “the reverse images showing the members of the Athletic association of Orlando High Schools”, the rest of the book past these posters contains newspaper clippings related to various sporting events that members of Orlando High School’s teams partook in.          The metadata for these is simpler than that of the posters, these entries will include the article name, description of the image, and any names listed.
