Week 12

This final week of the semester admittedly less happened than I would have liked due to some unforeseen circumstances. Even the scanning of the yearbook, something that should only have taken two sessions, was not finished. The first half was finished on Monday and I talked with Dr.Miller and Kesley and decided Friday would be when we finished scanning the book. Imagine my surprise when UCF’s shuttles seemingly weren’t running today, still not sure why, leaving me with no way to get to the CHDR expect by calling Kesley. And due to her family circumstances today she could only stay for a hour or so at most, so with around 100 pages finished and maybe 30 more this yearbook is not finished being scanned.

Pictured below is two of the clubs that were active at OHS during, at least the 1950-51 school year, these being the Latin Club and Pan-American League. The later of which I must admit to me sounds like something insidious you'd hear a movie set in the mid 30's to early 40's  that the villain works for . Thankfully the Pan-American League pictured below is designed to show students the "understanding of the ideals and principles of inter-American Friendship." My only assumption is that this is referring to internal American affairs as opposed to a continent wide ideals program.

Pictured below is the OHS Station NFL, a radio club. Part of me wonders how many of these clubs were founded out of genuine interest in the topic or how many were set up to teach students additional skills that were more prudent to the post war economy.

Among one of the more interesting things that we found is the Tiger den Council, from what the yearbook says it's a social area, presumably on campus because it's sponsor is the PTA. But we have tickets to the tiger den and other social events in the 1947-51 scrapbook. The den shown below clearly has pool tables and a lunch counter, but there is no indication of where on campus this den is located. I think looking back at the pictures in the 51 scrapbook could possibly reveal some more information around some of these social events, maybe even reveal what other kinds of events were held in this tiger den.

Seeing a rifle club in a high school almost feels surreal given the amount of gun violence in today's America, but I do remember my parents telling us about classes and clubs related to more of "home life", how to take care of things around the home and in general just being responsible.

Overall, simply put it's a yearbook with everything that you'd expect from one; but combined with the oldest scrapbook that Howard had in it's possession I think that maybe we can get a better idea of how school life was like for Americans in the post war years.  With the scrapbook being so personal I also think that we can get a idea of how one small group of OHS's students not only wanted to remember their high school years. But combined with the year book and the later scrapbooks I think that we can see also what OHS felt was worth remembering in these years.
