Summer week 9

 This week was spent working on the metadata for the 1950 scrapbook. Initially there was some annoyance with having to switch between the image and the excel sheet so fill out the metadata, but I found a portable monitor I forgot I had letting me see both the image and the excel sheet at the same time.

While working on this it became clear that I still need to review the metadata material to better fill out the subject and category fields. Something else I'm not sure of is how much content needs to be filled into the description field. In the above image, that I assume is very low res because it is two screens compressed, I filled out the entire three columns of names into the description field.  Furthermore there are some fields that I'm not sure how to fill out, the copyright for instance since these items are on loan from Howard Middle School, are they the copy right holder? Is there a copy right holder since these could be considered "private" collection items? or does it go up to OCPS since it's school property? Things like this are kind of difficult to get a accurate answer for based on available materiel from RICHES because it operates under the assumption that most things are known and lacks (at least as far as I remember) a answer for what to place if you dont know something other than leaving it blank.

    Since there are so few items in this book the metadata shouldn't take too long, it's just a question of how much needs to be placed into the description since that's the largest field. After another look over the metadata book and library of congress website filling out the other fields should be more accurate to what RICHES would like to see.

Week 12

    This final week of the semester admittedly less happened than I would have liked due to some unforeseen circumstances. Even the scanning of the yearbook, something that should only have taken two sessions, was not finished. The first half was finished on Monday and I talked with Dr.Miller and Kesley and decided Friday would be when we finished scanning the book. Imagine my surprise when UCF’s shuttles seemingly weren’t running today, still not sure why, leaving me with no way to get to the CHDR expect by calling Kesley. And due to her family circumstances today she could only stay for a hour or so at most, so with around 100 pages finished and maybe 30 more this yearbook is not finished being scanned.  Pictured below is two of the clubs that were active at OHS during, at least the 1950-51 school year, these being the Latin Club and Pan-American League. Summer week 10

 This week was initially going to be spent working on editing the images of the 1950 "sports" scrapbook, only for me to try to use Photoshop at the school library and be met with a “you no longer have access to this content, contact a administrator” message. In absence of being able to work on the photo editing I continued work on the metadata for the scrapbook. While many of these are going to be similar, “here’s a image of a Orlando Senior High School V ____ football game poster” and “the reverse images showing the members of the Athletic association of Orlando High Schools”, the rest of the book past these posters contains newspaper clippings related to various sporting events that members of Orlando High School’s teams partook in.          The metadata for these is simpler than that of the posters, these entries will include the article name, description of the image, and any names listed. Week 7

 This week was spent doing the training for the CHDR's titan scanner. While I failed to get pictures the process is fairly straight forward to explain. You start a session, pick the correct settings and from there adjust the white balance and exposure as necessary to get the image toward a neutral gray, and then you adjust from there down to a more whiteish image. It's a fairly involved set up requiring you to remember a exact set of steps and settings but once that;s done the work is straight forward enough, it's just getting to the point where you're comfortable with the software. Besides the scanner I got around to adding all the items we took pictures of to the excel sheet for inventory purposes. Next week we will meet and hopefully scan in the items we have so the real work on transcription can begin with higher quality images, working from a phone camera images are fine with how today's cameras are but having these high res images is more important for  RICHES...
